It is undeniable...everyone has a particular way they like their Vegemite. Making Vegemite on toast for someone is a very very personal experience, usually with very serious repercussions for both parties. I have always been a Vegemite minimalist. Butter on toast (that has turned cold) and just a scraping of veggie. I couldn't ask for more. This was my breakfast for years and it was perfect for every occasion.. running out the door, nursing a hangover, savoring a rare morning at home..eventually B even mastered my vegemite desires....Then suddenly my Vegemite ritual changed. A friend of mine ordered their personal 'vegemite on toast' formula at a cafe once and I thought it sounded so vile that I never thought about it again.........until one day, when we ran out of butter. Now I am hooked. Sour dough toast (turning cold), with a very thick spread of ripe Haas avocado and a generous smear of Vegemite. Perfection!!!! The avocado is mild enough to be just like having loads of butter but with out the guilt. And of course avocado on toast always needs salt, so Vegemite is the obvious solution. Oh so good!!
One of my favourite culinary triumphs of 2008.
Vegemite Perfection
2 slices of sour dough
1 ripe Hass avocado
1 tablspoon vegemite
1 lemon
olive oil
Brush sourdough toast with olive oil and heat in a pan until golden.
(you can skip that step and just use the toaster but this is truly delicious)
Allow toast to cool slighty so it is crunchy.
Spread half an avocado over each slice and then mush some vegemite over the avocado.
Drizzle with some lemon juice and your vegemite breakfast is ready to go .. YUM!!!
So join the census. How do you have your Vegemite? And if you don't eat vegemite (you poor soul) what do you think of this 'Vegemite' phenomenon? Do you think we are all mad????? I understand why people who weren't raised on vegemite think it tastes like poison, but I simple can not imagine not having it in my life.

Gemini and breasts are funny! I can't think of anything else either.
Hmm... Vegemite. I grew up on Marmite and Bovril so... :)
I'm one of those who don't get vegemite. I can't say whether this is in fact fortunate or unfortunate--it all depends on whose viewpoint the fact hinges on. But I've seen so many people totally hooked on vegemite (my yankee boyfriend being one of them, but then again, hi mom remarried an Australian). In my opinion butter always tastes better. Especially lescure and saint mere beurre st. d'isigny.
I agree with Christy completely! Avocado is no substitute for a healthy dose of butter! A friend of mine has her vegemite toast with a fried egg on top...not my cup of tea but she raves about it - might be worth a try. LB
hi christy, trust me the joy of butter is not lost on me...lescure...d'isigny..we certainly do have a lot in common :)
Baby beurre, fried egg with vegemite?? maybe this works but I'm not sure I am going to try it... you try it for me and let me know :)
dee, marmite...bovril??? yes you certainly understand the insanity that is vegemite :)
I think I could do vegemite and avocado. A friend made me try it as is and it was surprising, not bad...just different. I bet you hear this a lot!!
I may have to give up my Australian citizenship as I don't really like Vegemite but love Promite!
I adore vegemite, usually when im waiting for my toast to cook i sneak in a couple of teaspoons straight...have sometimes wondered if I am addicted yikes!
